Annotated Transcript

Here you will find a list of the courses that I took during Michigan State University's (MSU) Master of Arts in Education (MAED) program. I had two concentrations: Literacy Education and Science & Mathematics. I also took many counseling and educational psychology courses as electives. The courses are listed in chronological order and organized by semester. For each course, I provided a course title, course instructor(s), and a brief description of my experience.

Summer 2019

TE 848: Writing Assessment and Instruction

Instructor: R. Jones

In this course, I learned the best practices for teaching writing. Through reading course text and having forum discussions, I learned how to inspire student writing successes. I learned how to teach and assess through writing traits, self assessment, peer-editing, and student-teacher conferences. Overall, this course taught me how to instill a love for writing in my students.

CEP 841: Classroom Management in the Inclusive Classroom

Instructors: C. Maher, T. Mariage, R. Ogle

In this course, I had the opportunity to gain foundational knowledge in classroom management. I learned about classroom-wide behavior management systems that are used as preventative measures as well as behavior interventions for specific types of behavior. Overall, this course taught me the importance of how my behavior and actions have an influence on the behaviors in my classroom.

ED 800: Concepts of Educational Inquiry

Instructor: S. Weiland

In this foundational course, I learned about the history of education and the inquiry of education. I had an opportunity to think and exchange ideas and beliefs about education and the various forms of inquiry within it. I studied how the inquiry of educational has changed overtime through many people. Overall, this course taught me a different perspective of viewing educational inquiry through history, criticisms, research, and theories.

TE 855: Teaching School Mathematics

Instructor: A. Parks

In this course, I learned about various methods of teaching school mathematics in different grade levels. I also learned about what it takes to teach students to reason mathematically and to build on one another’s mathematical reasoning. I want my students' thinking to feel welcomed in my math classroom where their efforts are celebrated and encouraged. Overall, this course taught me to teach for understanding within my math classroom.

 

 

CEP 832: Educating Students with Challenging Behavior

Instructors: J. Aupperlee, V. Mousouli

In this course, I learned about managing challenging behavior through discussion and observations. I learned what challenging behavior may look like, causes for it, and the best way to help students with challenging behavior. I focused on one of the students I had in my course and his defiance. Based on what I learned in the course, I was able to intervene and improve his behavior through a behavior modification technique. Overall, this course taught me how to identify and help students with challenging behavior.

TE 846: Accommodating Differences in Literacy Learners

Instructor: L. Tortorelli

In this course, I studied today's best practices in teaching reading and literacy. I engaged in discussions and read texts about how to identify areas of growth and possible interventions. I analyzed one of my student's reading data and created lessons and instructional goals to increase my student's reading proficiency. Overall, this course taught me how to assess, analyze, and create instruction based on student reading data.

TE 831: Teaching School Subject Matter with Technology

Instructor: D. Hartman

In this course, I learned the importance of including technology in a classroom. I learned about various programs and websites that will enhance my teaching through the use of technology. One of my projects included creating a video that can be used in my classroom. Overall, this course taught me how to include technology in my teaching and why it is beneficial.

TE 861A: Teaching Science Understanding

Instructor: J. Christensen

In this course, I was introduced to the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS). I learned the aspects of NGSS and how to create lessons and deliver instruction based on NGSS. I created a pollination unit to be used in any second grade science classroom that includes a lesson plan, worksheets, materials, and an assessment. Overall, this course taught me how to deliver the many aspects of teaching science.

 

TE 842: Elementary Reading Assessment and Instruction

Instructor: D. Hartman

In this course, I studied the various aspects of teaching and assessing students' reading abilities. I strengthened my ability to assess a student who is struggling with reading, create lesson plans and interventions based on the data, and provide accurate instruction that will benefit the student. I analyzed student data on phonics, vocabulary, spelling, and fluency in order to create an intervention plan to help the student's reading scores. Overall, this course taught me to analyze student reading data and create data-based instruction.

ED 870: Capstone Seminar

Instructors: A. Gaunt, M. Koehler

In this course, I was given the opportunity to reflect on all of my graduate courses that I have taken at MSU. I created this online portfolio to showcase my strengths, accomplishments, and who I am as an educator and a graduate student. While creating this portfolio, I strengthened my ability to create a website and demonstrate my qualities as a student and educator. Overall, this course taught me how to showcase my abilities and knowledge in a website format.
